在赤焰引擎乐队表演结束后,女生激动地喊道:“They are so cool! I become their fans!”

Chinese New Year Celebration Gala Ended Successfully!

The Greater Lansing Chinese New Year Celebration Gala was held Feb. 21 at Meridian Mall successfully, and audiences enjoyed a visual feast.

The Lion and dragon parade throughout Meridian Mall, began at 1:30 p.m., attracted most people’s attention. Many passers-by followed the lion and dragon of the stage, watching wonderful performance with people came from different religions, different ages and different countries.

Lisa Johnson and Jack Johnson are a couple who adopted a girl from China. This is the second time they came here to enjoy the show, for they wanted to know more about Chinese culture. Jack said that he liked the lion and dragon dance best because it was vivid. And his wife also expressed her admiration.

“It is really amazing! The culture is so beautiful, even drinking tea is so elegant, and my daughter is coming from such a mysterious culture,” Lisa said, after watching the performance. “I love Chinese culture so much.”
Joseph Dever, a father who came to the show with his daughter, said, “My daughter loves fashion show. The dress is traditional and elegant and we would not see these in magazines. ”

An old gentleman whose ancestral home is Taiwan said something different.
He said that even though most programs are fantastic, especially the group song Happy New Year and the fashion show, there was still something needing to improve.

“Qipao (a Chinese-style woman’s dress with high neck and slit skirt) is beautiful, but it is Manchu, Huqin (a music instrument) is also not Han but Hu (the Northern barbarian tribes in ancient China). They are not really Chinese traditional cultures,” he said. “The selection of music is also not perfect. My Hometown is the Other Side of the Mountain and The Spring River Flows East are very representative Chinese songs, maybe in the future singers can sing them.”

Qing Fan, the solo soprano, sang three songs: Mother, Sear Lover Washing Clothes in the river and Nessun Drma.

“I choose Mother to express the thoughts of mother. We are all far away from our homeland and missing families a lot,” Fan said. “My friends made a video called Go Home Often, then sent it to families on New Year’s Eve, their families are all touched.”

In addition to the Chinese-style programs, the Chinese New Year Celebration Gala also had some modern programs, such as hip-hop dance, band music and opera.

The band “Burning Engine” definitely drove young people crazy. Audiences sang with them, screaming and clapping. Three high school students from Lansing High thought it was pretty cool and said they became the fans of the band.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people during a year. In China, families get together to celebrate their harvest and make a good wish for the next year. Even though now these Chinese people are in United State, they still come together, celebrate the festival with other cultures.

Lisa Johnson said that in her perspective, the Chinese New Year was more like a cultural feast. Joseph Dever also agreed with it and said Chinese New Year was more positive and happier.

This is the third year that Greater Lansing Chinese Association hold Chinese New Year Celebration Gala at the Meridian Mall. Julie Brixie, the treasurer of Meridian Township said that after Michigan State University decided to increase the amount of international students, the township wanted to take advantage of Chinese people and to draw more people come to Meridian Township.

There is no doubt that the cultural difference between Chinese people and American people is huge. But just because of the cultural difference, people with various backgrounds come together and gain happiness from both sides. It is what that the Chinese New Year Celebration Gala wants to show.

GLCA had its first rehearsal of the gala:

The 2015 Greater Lansing Chinese New Year Celebration Gala will be held on Feb. 21 at the Meridian Mall, in order to greet the arrival of annual Spring Festival, which is the most important festival in Chinese culture. The Greater Lansing Chinese Association (GLCA) begins the preparation of the Chinese New Year Event.

On Feb. 8, GLCA had its first rehearsal of the gala. Except hosts, fashion show models, taiji players, Extreme Hiphop Crew dancers, and Tea Ceremony Club performers were present. Even if this was only a rehearsal, they brought a wonderful visual festival.

Julie Jiang, the chair of the GLCA, said that it was the third time they held a gala in Meridian mall.

“Lansing is the capital of Michigan, so I want to combine surrounding cities work together to hold the gala, celebrating our Chinese New Year. Last year, we worked with Ann Arbor, and this year, we work with Detroit. ” Julie said, “and I also think it is a great way to spread Chinese culture and influence Americans. I won’t change the forms and processes of the Chinese New Year Celebration, because I want people to get used to it and know it is what Chinese New Year looks like, so that they would not be confused.”

Qing Zhang, a Michigan State University student majored in Journalism, was the model of fashion show. This was the second time for her to attend Greater Lansing Chinese New Year Celebration Gala. When talked about why she wanted to attend this activity, she said it was coincidence.

“Last year when I dress rehearsal for MSU Spring Festival gala, Julie selected some girls to do the Qipao show, I was one of them. I thought it was really interesting, and decided to attend again.” Qing Zhang said.

She chose a song called Blue and White Porcelain as the background music was because this song was very Chinese style and retro, and it might drive foreigners want to know more about China.

This Qipao show, will performance at the gala, vividly displayed Chinese classical women’s elegance, affectionate and charm. Furthermore, it also conveyed the beauty of Chinese traditional dress.

Not like the fashion show, Extreme Hiphop Crew dancers display their glamour in another way. The girls are dynamic and ardent. People who are interested in Hip-hop will enjoy this dance.

In order to show the best side at the Greater Lansing Chinese New Year Celebration Gala, Extreme Hiphop Crew members try their best.

“It is pretty tired. We practice every day and don’t have time to have a meal. Not until 11, we won’t go home. ” Vincy, a member of Extreme Hiphop Crew, said. “I hope audiences will like our performance.”

It is kind of an evidence that American culture also impacts Chinese students. Chinese travel across the ocean to study here and live there. As time goes by, both cultures have already combined while we are not noticing. And the Greater Lansing Chinese New Year Celebration Gala is the product of two combined cultures.
